This is a very interesting and challenging course is suitable for all First Aiders looking to improve their skills and those that must have this qualification for their employment. An example may be a workplace First Responder, Rescue Diver, Dive Master, Outdoor recreation workers, Life Guards.

This course includes the unit HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.

Course Details

Purpose:
This unit covers competency in advanced techniques for management of the administration of oxygen and ventilation of the lungs in line with the requirements of the Australian Resuscitation Council and State and Territory regulatory bodies.

Course Format:
Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.

 

Refresher Face to Face contact time of at least 5 Hours
Blended Face to Face contact time of at least 5 Hours
Face-to-Face Face to Face contact time of at least 6 Hours

 

Recommended Renewal Interval: Yearly

Assessment: practical continuous assessments during face-to-face and a short theory exam.

Physical Requirements

It is important to note that there are physical standards which relate to the level of performance required when undertaking accredited training. There can be no exceptions to these Australian Government requirements that are clearly written into the Training Package.
Therefore, students who are unable to satisfy the physical requirements of the course cannot be deemed competent or issued with a statement of attainment, even if the qualification is a necessary part of their employment conditions.
For this course the student must be physically capable of performing uninterrupted CPR for at least 2 minutes on an adult CPR manikin placed on the floor.

Course Assessment

Assessment – Theory

Question paper based on the knowledge requirements of the course, such as:
State/Territory regulations, first aid codes of practice and workplace procedures and community considerations
Duty of care requirements, consent and respectful behaviour towards a casualty
Requirements for currency of skill and knowledge, own skill, limitations, privacy and confidentiality requirements
Relevant first aid principles and procedures in line with current ARC basic life support flow chart (DRSABCD)
Safe work practices to minimise risks and potential hazards
Infection control principles and procedures, including use of standard precautions
Basic anatomy and physiology of the chest
Considerations in provision of first aid for specified conditions
How to recognise a person is not breathing normally
Response/consciousness, upper airway and effect of positional change
Considerations when providing CPR such as airway obstruction due to body position
Appropriate duration and cessation of CPR
Appropriate use of an AED including chain of survival
When to apply oxygen therapy and oxygen resuscitation as appropriate to casualty’s condition
Oxygen flow rates relevant to delivery device and different sizes of casualties
How to administer oxygen appropriately using specified delivery devices
Considerations for administering oxygen to adults, children and infants
Hazards associated with casualty management and the administration of oxygen
The importance of debriefing and awareness of potential need for stress-management techniques and available support following an emergency situation

Assessment – Practical

Physical demonstrations (skills)

The simulated assessment environments will reflect the real-life working environment where these skills and knowledge would be performed, with all the relevant equipment and resources of that working environment.  Skills must be demonstrated by the student working individually in an environment that provides realistic in-depth, industry-validated scenarios and simulations to assess students’ skills and knowledge.
It’s important that students have knowledge of the content of this course. The assessable practical skills are listed below.
You will be assessed on performing basic oxygen scenario and task demonstrations to:

Assessments conducted during the face-to-face training session(s) include:

Practical scenarios and performance tasks 

  • Adult CPR (including defibrillation and placing the casualty in the recovery position)
  • Infant CPR
  • Administer oxygen to an adult and child

Documentation: Completion of an incident report form

Theory assessment: A written assessment consisting of short-answer and multiple-choice questions.

Course requirements

An individual undertaking the Course in Basic Oxygen Administration for First Aid must be able to demonstrate current competence in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. All participants of this course set will be completing the HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation unit of competency and will meet the entry requirement.

Furthermore, an individual undertaking this course with Allens Training Pty Ltd will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:

  • Physical capability to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstration skills including CPR (CPR must be performed on the floor and rescue breathing techniques demonstrated on manikins, with no exemption)

It is recommended that participants in this course have literacy and numeracy competencies equivalent to the Australian Core Skills Framework Level 2. An example of ACSF Level 2 is being able to request appropriate emergency assistance at the scene of the incident.

The above training courses provided to General Practitioners may be recognised as Professional Development and can be used to meet formal requirements of the medical registration.

Enrolment information

Please notify us of at the time of booking if you have a disability or any reason why you may not be able to kneel on the floor to carry out resuscitation practice, tie bandages or if you have any special needs regarding taking the written exam at the end of the day.

What to wear

You will need to wear comfortable casual clothing as we will spend a substantial amount of time kneeling or lying on the floor, bandaging and other practical applications of Senior First Aid. Writing material is not necessary – just bring a pen.

Proof of identity: NSW Drivers License, Passport, Birth Certificate, Student Identity with Photo. See the guidelines.

Provision for Lunch: All training locations are located close to shopping centres or a cafe. If you do not want to buy your lunch please bring it with you.
